Reducing greenhouse gas emissions...
Methane is 21 times worse as a greenhouse gas (21 times more reflective) than CO2. When Norseman Engineering manages landfill gas, methane is prevented from becoming a greenhouse gas. This results in a 95% reduction in the carbon footprint of the managed site.

Conserving natural gas...
The combustible component of landfill gas is 55% methane which is the same energy producing chemical that constitutes 95% of natural gas. When Norseman Engineering utilizes the extracted landfill gas, not only is methane is prevented from entering the atmosphere, but a precious resource - natural gas - is conserved.

Conserving diesel fuel...
Methane from landfill gas can also be used to replace diesel fuel in piston engines. (Shown here is a 200 horsepower Caterpillar engine which uses a small amount of diesel as a pilot fuel, with the remaining combustion requirements coming from landfill gas.)

Benefitting taxpayers...
When a city hires Norseman Engineering to manage a site, the city benefits, not only from free project management, but also from a royalty. See an example...

Benefitting the local economy...
Norseman Engineering is based in Delta, British Columbia and manages a variety of projects in and around the lower mainland. When local Governments work with Norsemen Engineering, they can feel confident that they are stimulating the local economy.

Benefitting industry with
lower fuel prices...
When Norseman Engineering preforms Natural Gas Extraction and utilization, industry benefits from a cheaper source of fuel. (This image shows the mixing station at Georgia Pacific that blends natural gas with landfill gas from the Port Mann Landfill. Georgia Pacific is one of the largest users of Natural Gas in British Columbia.)

About Us

Norseman Engineering Ltd. is a small engineering firm based in Delta, B.C. specializing in systems for the recovery, management, extraction, and utilization of landfill gas. Landfill gas is a naturally occurring waste gas produced by the anaerobic decomposition of organic wastes in a landfill site. Its major components are methane and carbon dioxide with a variety of other gasses in trace amounts. This composition is almost identical to natural gas, which makes landfill gas a valuable alternative energy resource with significant economic and environmental benefits.

The management of landfill gas is important for a number of reasons. Its methane component is not only an energy resource, but is also a dangerous explosion hazard, and a powerful greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. Additionally, the trace concentrations of a variety of other compounds which may be present in landfill gas can create nuisance odours, degrade air quality and may cause adverse health effects to the local environment and community. Norseman Engineering aims to mitigate these hazards, while at the same time providing local businesses with an affordable alternative resource.

Since 1986, Norseman Engineering Ltd. has designed, built, and operated numerous landfill gas management systems throughout the province of British Columbia, providing economic opportunities, risk mitigation, and thousands of tonnes in greenhouse gas reductions to local businesses and communities.   Read More
