Norseman Engineering has designed and developed a successful landfill gas extraction and utilization project as a joint venture between the City of Coquitlam and NewsTech Recycling Ltd. Operational since 1995, the system extracts landfill gas from the previously closed Coquitlam Landfill and by way of a compressor and transmission pipeline sends gas to NewsTech Recycling for use in their tailings tumble drier. The drier was modified by Norseman to run on a mixture of methane and natural gas, representing a new and innovative use for landfill gas. The newsprint tailings are dried for use as soil conditioners by NewsTech, which finds an alternative use for waste that would have originally been sent to a landfill. The Coquitlam Landfill site is now in use as a par-3 golf course and driving range. It is a prime example of how landfill sites, with proper landfill gas management, can be successfully reclaimed and reused after their closure.
