North Vancouver

The Premier Street Landfill in North Vancouver is an example of quality landfill site utilization and community reclamation after landfill closure. The landfill was actively filled with waste from 1956 until its closure in 2002. Norseman Engineering was instrumental in installing a landfill gas collection system for odour control shortly after.
This project is special in its conversion into a recreational park, a pioneering effort by the municipality of North Vancouver. The completed areas of the landfill were leveled and converted into baseball and soccer fields, showing how landfills can be reclaimed and serve the community after closure. The first section of the landfill to close had a gas collection system installed and the landfill gas was used to provide hot water and heating for the municipality's sports field house for many years.

As sections of the landfill were closed and the collection system expanded, efforts were made to find a customer that could utilize the landfill gas. However, the topography of the surrounding land made transport of the landfill gas too expensive. A flare was installed for odour control and to prevent off site migration.
